SUPERFORTRESS is the New York City Electro/Indie-Rock band lead by Japanese musician NAO. They have been performing in the Lower East Side for over 5 years, receiving acclaim from publications such as The Village Voice, and often compared to David Bowie, Duran Duran, and The Human League. Originally “Nao’s Superfortress,” started performing in clubs with only his electric guitar and a sequencer. He quickly assembled the band with numerous local musicians; in 2004 he changed the name to SUPERFORTRESS and focused on 80’s flavored synth based pop-rock. After releasing a self-titled album in 2005, SUPERFORTRESS made a promotional trip to Germany in February 2006 to perform at the famous White Trash Fast Food venue in Berlin. In the same year, they participated in a MTV Asia sponsored event & appeared at M.E.A.N.Y Fest & CMJ Music Marathon. The tune, "Missing People" was in heavy rotation on many collage radio stations. The band released the EP "Candy Apple II" in April 2008. Which includes "Moment of Time" mixed by Bill Racine (Rogue Wave, Mates of State, Hopewell & The Flaming Lips). This EP is featuring more compactly assembled, catchy electro-rock tracks, less ambient than the previous self titled album but certainly enough synth. With the newly released EP & opening up for Gil Mantera's Party Dream in 2008, SUPERFORTRESS is charged up for more action! *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** On Radio : (for album "Superfrotress") No.5 on CMJ Alt. CMJ Music Marathon 06 "Robotic drums and catchy keyboard lines sounding fresh out of the '80s." The Deli Magazine "Play frantic and dancy electro-punk with heavy reliance on an old sequencer that runs on floppy disc" THE VILLAGE VOICE (06/15/05 & 06/29/05) "This new album pulls off a more fleshed-out and drama-vocaled electrofunk that triangulates between Bowie’s Scary Monsters, A Flock of Seagulls, and Wax Trax Records." Chuck Eddy Amazon.com (05/28/05) "Nao is a musical genius, and all ten tracks on the album demonstrate that that claim is no understatement. If you're a fan of eighties-style electronic music and you, for lack of a better term, miss the eighties, order Superfortress' debut. If you're into that sort of thing, it's very doubtful you'll be disappointed." Der Kommissar - Amazon Top 50 Customer Reviewer Amazon.com (05/10/05) "Superfortress is sticking to its own path. This is a different brand of 80s-flavoured music, with more originality, spunk, creativity and slick danceability-----Superfortress has the retro originality that it takes to stand out of the crowd of new rock bands. Lovely. " E. A Solinas - Amazon Top 10 Customer Reviewer ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ROOLS LIKE OZZY! (05/07/03) Nao's Superfortress has been creating a stir on the ROOLS web site, coming in #1 on the Top Twenty Check out their most popular song, "April Depression," at http://www.peterbernard.com/rlo/nao.html Peter Bernard ROOLS LIKE OZZY! (04/30/03) This past Friday at Rififi on East 11th Street, Tibbie X of the X-Possibles, Queen of New York Hardcore Punk, played bass and sang sweet backup vocals in the ELECTRO-POP BAND NAO'S SUPERFORTRESS! Tibbie was great but it was pretty shocking to a punk rock fan at points. Some of the songs were really disco-y, Nao sometimes plays that "wokka-wokka" Shaft guitar like the old Doc Severinson Tonight Show band-- But ! Nao's songs are very catchy and Tibbie and Nao sound great singing together--kind of reminiscent of early Pixies. Peter Bernard ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THE VILLAGE VOICE (2/5/03) Spiffily outfited in mullet and racecar-driver outerwear, Asian American frontguy Nao hires various hands (often including DJ Krush’s sax player) to help him combine modern guitar-dominated electro/rock with a new wave pop sensibility. All his shyly vocodered songs on last year’s EP sounded sorta like "Your Woman" by White Town or "1979" by Smashing Pumpkins. His newer stuff swoops through space more. Chuck Eddy
